WHY

Arsenic and Fluoride Contamination

  • Severity of poisoning :
  • Arsenic
  • Fluoride

Arsenic – the WHO terms it “The largest mass poisoning in recorded history”

10 ppb

WHO guideline value of arsenic in drinking water

50 ppb

Permissible limit of arsenic in India & Bangladesh

300 ppb

9 districts flagged as severely affected in West Bengal alone

Arsenic poisoning causes skin lesions, cancers, liver & cardiovascular diseases

Fluoride - The severity of poisoning is worsened by poor nutrition

Fluorosis causes irreversible deformities & disproportionately affects children

  • Scale of the crisis:
  • Arsenic
  • Fluoride
In areas where groundwater is the only source of safe drinking water, Arsenic & Fluoride contamination are now a serious crisis threatening public health.

It is estimated that at least 100 million people are exposed to arsenic contaminated groundwater in states like West Bengal, Assam, and Karnataka alone

In areas where groundwater is the only source of safe drinking water, Arsenic & Fluoride contamination are now a serious crisis threatening public health.

60 million people drink groundwater contaminated by fluoride in over 70% of the states in India

What

Leveraging innovative technologies to
bring impact at scale

  • INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS:
  • Arsenic
  • Fluoride

Innovative solutions for Arsenic

Electro-Chemical Arsenic Remediation (ECAR) uses a small electric current to generate arsenic sorbent within contaminated groundwater with minimum sludge and wastage of water. Iron electrocoagulation effectively oxidizes As(III) to As(V) and achieves higher overall arsenic removal.

Innovative solutions for Fluoride

Scalable and Affordable Fluoride Removal (SAFR) uses bauxite , an abundant resource in India to remediate fluoride-contaminated groundwater. Bauxite is injected and mixed into pumped groundwater for approx. 20 minutes before entering a settling tank. This method of processing is 3X to 5X cheaper than using Activated Alumina (AA) and is a non-toxic process without leaching of aluminium during treatment.
